Fueling the machine causing issues we are fighting against: Ethical dilemma of using social media for civil society causes
How can we, as journalists and activists, use social media in an ethical and responsible way, while remaining true to our core values? In a digital environment increasingly driven by profit, algorithms, and surveillance, is staying on these platforms and actively contributing to
their financial and political power ultimately counterproductive to the very goals we advocate for, such as freedom of expression, transparency, and resistance to censorship? Should we be questioning our presence on platforms that often enable misinformation, hate speech, and the silencing of marginalized voices, while at the same time relying on them for visibility and
outreach? What meaningful alternatives exist to disengaging from social media (entirely)? Are there viable platforms or strategies that allow us to amplify truth without compromising our ethics or contributing to harmful systems?
